Toyota Facing Record Fine; Steele Says He & Obama Have It Tougher (VIDEO)

By Veronica Waters

  • Accusing Toyota of hiding a "dangerous defect," the government will seek to slap the company with the maximum $16 million fine. They say there's evidence that Toyota knew it had a problem with sticking gas pedals in late September--but dragged their feet on issuing a recall until late January.  Toyota has two weeks to decide whether to accept or appeal the penalty.

  • Rescuers trying to pull trapped men from a coal mine in West Virginia may have to wait until this evening while crews clear the mine of toxic fumes.  Twenty-five deaths are confirmed; four are still trapped and officials say it's unlikely they're still alive.

  • Black Greeks open up the floor to talk health insurance reform.  The National Pan Hellenic Council hosts a 7:00 forum this evening at the West Hunter Baptist Church on Abernathy.  State Attorney General Thurbert Baker, an Omega man, will discuss his recent battle with the governor over his refusal to sue over the health care law.

  • Golf's No. 1 player is back at Augusta, looking like the Tiger Woods of old--save for a goatee--and vowing he can win the Green Jacket.  Woods took time out for a news conference and apologized to fellow golfers for his scandal-plagued private life as he prepared for the Masters. He says he's a better man now, and that he plans to tone down his reactions on the course--positive and negative.

  • Another head rolls at the Republican National Committee; the chief of staff is gone, more fallout after the RNC footed the $2,000 bill for a January trip to a bondage themed topless club in west Hollywood.  Chairman Michael Steele tells Good Morning America his job is a little bit tougher because of his race--that black leaders like he and Barack Obama have  slimmer margins for error.

"The honest answer is, 'yes,'" Steele said. "It just is. Barack Obama has a slimmer margin. A lot of folks do. It's a different role for me to play and others to play, and that's just the reality of it. But you take that as a part of the nature of it."

White House spokesman Robert Gibbs called the remark "silly."  He says Steele's problem isn't the race card, it's the credit card.

  • An Ohio womanshot her cousin to death Easter Sunday--because the 19-year-old didn't dress for dinner.  The 42-year-old Evelyn Burgess told officers the teen's t-shirt and jean shorts were inappropriate Easter dinner wear.  Burgess is accused of shooting Danielle Pickens in the head when she walked outside to leave.

  • An Atlanta cop finds his future in limbo after pleading no contest to a domestic violence case.  Reginald Fisher got a year's probation, accused of grabbing the mother of one of his children during an argument last fall.  Fisher's already on indefinite suspension for shooting an unarmed man in the face at a Mechanicsville apartment complex last May.

  • An hour a day keeps the fat away.  A new European study says one hour of moderate to vigorous exercise a day can help teens beat the effects of a common obesity-related gene with the nickname "fatso.'' The lead author says participating in sports is one way to do it.

  • A woman plans to sue a south Fulton County gas station after she says they sold her gasoline that was mixed with water back in January. The car died about three or four miles after the fill-up, and a mechanic diagnosed the problem.  The Covington woman says the Citgo on Fulton Industrual Boulevard still refuses to pay for the repairs.  A rep for the station says they plan to take care of it.

  • Duke had to work for every point against tiny Butler to win its fourth national men's college basketball championship Monday night. A desperation shot at the buzzer by Butler hit the glass and clanged off the rim, giving Duke a 61-59 win.  The title is Duke's fourth and first since 2001.

  • An ex-"wife" sues ABC.  Nicollette Sheridan, who played the real estate agent divorcee Edie Britt in "Desperate Housewives,'' claims in a lawsuit that producer Marc Cherry hit her on the Wisteria Lane set as she asked him about a script line...and that after she complained to ABC she was written out of the show.  she's asking for $20 million for assault and wrongful termination.

  • The KISS 104.1 weather forecast:  sunny and unseasonably warm, high of 88, low of 59.  Wednesday, mostly to partly sunny high of 85.  Thursday, scattered showers 70% likely in the afternoon and evening; high 68.
