A river and everything else runs through the Chattahoochee. The river is ripe with e-coli. Experts say the incidence of
bacteria is 42 times higher than the highest safe levels and that it will be
weeks before the waterways are free and clean of sewage and other debris left by
the floods. Clean up crews are advised to wear protective gear before getting
into the river for work.
It's back to school for students in Douglas and
Paulding counties. Schools re-opened this morning after last week's
flooding. School officials say because many roads remain closed, parents may
need to walk students to the nearest bus stop and stay with them until the bus
picks up. Water, power and air conditioning have been restored to all schools,
but until a boil water advisory ends, students will be provided bottled
water.
The search has resumed for an unnamed Carroll County woman whose Jeep Liberty was swept away by flood waters. Authorities found the mangled vehicle near where Mobley Creek and the Dog River meet in Douglas county.
Georgia Insurance Commissioner John
Oxendine has doubled his estimate on damage from last
week's floods. He no estimates losses at half a billion dollars. The state is
vowing to find the money needed to repair damaged roads and bridges. Nine
Georgians lost their lives in the flooding.
The surviving children of Dr. Martin Luther King,
Jr. and Coretta Scott King return to court. They continue to argue over who
controls their late parents' estate. Dexter King's latest charge is that Martin
III and the Rev. Bernice King failed to tell him about a safety deposit box
their mother kept which contain love letters to their
father.
The letters, lyrics, and scrips from
the late rapper Tupac Shakurwill be archived at the Atlanta University
Center.Experts say the collection will enhance
hip-hop studies, resarch and scholarship. Shakur was murdered in 1996, but in
death has released a half dozen albums of previously unpublished material. A
number of books have been written about him.
President Barack
Obama, father to third-grader Sasha and sixth grader Malia says US
students don't spend enough time in school.
He is proposing either a
longer school day or longer school year so that American students will be more
competitive with students from other countries.
In the meantime, the
President will join the First Lady in Denmark later this week to support
Chicago's bid for the 2016 Summer Olympics. Obama becomes the first U.S.
president to take on such a direct role in lobbying for an Olympics event.
It will cost you more to go home for the holidays. Many airlines, including Atlanta-based Delta Airlines are tacking on a $10 surcharge for travel on the Sunday after Thanksgiving and on January 2nd and 3rd. Airlines which have not added the surcharge are Southwest and Continental.
Crude oil prices are trading below $66 a barrell.
Gas prices are also down, averaging $2.52 nationwide. Gas is significantly
cheaper in metro Atlanta. A year ago, gas cost drivers more than $4 a
gallon.
