Flash Floods Close Roads, Schools; Victoria Rowell's Political Emmy Dress (POLL)

By Veronica Waters

  • Carroll, Douglas, Gwinnett, and Paulding County Schools are closed due to the rains and flash floods.   The downpour has washed out roads, and bridges, and caused a massive mudslide along Highway 78 near Hugh Howell, shutting down to the westbound commute into Atlanta.

  • Georgia Power crews are braving the storms and mess this morning to restore electricity to some 18,000 customers, mostly on the east side.  They expect the number of outages to fluctuate as more trees give way in the soggy ground.

  • A boil-water advisory is in effect for Douglas County, because water mains have been crushed or broken by washed out roads and bridges.

  • DeKalb County Sheriff Tom Brown today announces "significant developments" in the case of murder fugitive Derrick Yancey--the ex-deputy who cut off his ankle monitor in April while awaiting trial for last year's shootings of his wife and a day laborer.

  • A security officer at Hartsfield-Jackson is accused of harboring a fugitive member of the so-called Black Mafia Family.  33-year-old Terrance Johnson is charged with renting an apartment in his name for Vernon Coleman, an alleged drug trafficker.  Authorities say Johnson was a bodyguard for Coleman, but they don't think he was involved in BMF's crimes.

  • A newborn delivered after her mother was fatally shot waiting for her school bus stop has died. Police in Charlotte, North Carolina are being quoted as saying the daughter of 15-year-old Tiffany Wright died early Sunday.  While no one's charged in her killing, police have charged her 36-year-old adoptive brother with Wright's statutory rape.

  • President Barack Obama continues a health care media blitz today; he's taping an interview with David Letterman; he'll be the only guest on the show.  It's the start of a busy week that also includes Obama's first speech at the United Nations.

  • Victoria Rowell made quite a statement at the Emmys red carpet Sunday night. She was wearing her politics not on her sleeve, but over her entire body.  What do you think of her gown?

  • The KISS 104.1 weather forecast:  showers and highs in the upper 70s, lows tonight in the upper 60s.
