Chris Brown Won't Discuss Details Of Rihanna Assault (VIDEO); Spelman Coed Killed; Baby Slapper Denied Bond

By Veronica Waters

Chris Brown tells Larry King he doesn't want to get into what happened the night he assaulted Rihanna; a Spelman coed is killed by a stray bullet; a judge denies bond for the man accused of slapping a stranger's crying toddler.  Details are all on today's KISS News Now!

  • Tragedy strikes one of the nation's top colleges as a 19-year-old Spelman coed is shot to death overnight near the commons of Clark Atlanta University.  Jasmine Lynn, a psychology major from Kansas City, Missouri, was walking home with friends along James P. Brawley Drive when a fight on a nearby street erupted into gunfire.  Friends yelled for Lynn to duck, but it was too late.  Another coed says she heard at least five shots.

"I walked up to the girl, 'cause she was laying on the ground, and she was, like, drenched in blood," says the young woman.  "I looked at her and she had a gunshot right in her chest, and it looked like she was taking her last breath."

An 18-year-old Clark Atlanta student was shot in the wrist by a stray bullet, and was treated at Grady--along with two other people involved in the brawl who suffered head wounds.  Atlanta Police hope security cameras on campus may have caught the suspect on tape before he ran away.  One person was apprehended near the campus, but it's not clear this morning if that was the shooter.

What happened between Chris Brown and Rihanna the night of February 8?  He's not saying, telling CNN's Larry King Live that out of respect for her privacy and his, he won't discuss details of his admitted felony assault on his ex-girlfriend.  "I guess that night is just one of those nights I could just take back and I really regret, and I feel totally ashamed of what I did," Brown said.  King asked Brown about something in his probation report which cited two other domestic incidents between the couple--one in Europe in which he allegedly pushed her against a wall, another in a car in Barbados.  Brown said he didn't remember those.

"As a actual couple, like, we have disputes and arguments but it never got to the extent that it got to this point," he said.

The 20-year-old also says his sentence is fair.  He admitted that he still loves Rihanna, and would be hurt if she began dating someone else.

"I definitely would be affected by it, but at the end of the day, I mean, we're not together," Brown says.  "So if she's happy, I'm cool."  See Brown's entire interview with Larry King here, then sound off with your comments below.  What do you think about what he had to say--or about what he didn't say?

  • Two women plead guilty to a ticket-fixing scam in DeKalb County Recorders Court.  Charlene Nettles Johnson admitted fixing traffic tickets for cash, raking in $20,000 over the past three years; she'll have to serve 12 months behind bars.  Sonia Williams will serve 30 days, after admitting that she got a finder's fee for bringing people with tickets to Johnson's attention.

  • No bond for the 61-year-old man accused of slapping a stranger's fussy toddler in a Stone Mountain Wal-Mart.  A Gwinnett County judge ordered Roger Stephens to stay behind bars until his next court appearance on the 8th.  Stephens allegedly told the crying girl's mother to shut her up or he'd do it for her--then slapped the child repeatedly near the frozen foods aisle. He says he's apologized to the mother.

  • A north Georgia pastor was killed in a drug sting, shot to death by agents on a task force; the GBI is investigating the death of 28-yr-old Jonathan Ayers.  He was not the target of the drug probe, but cops say they approached Ayers to question him when he dropped off the woman who was.  They contend he tried to avoid them and struck one of the agents before another cop opened fire, killing Ayers.  The agent hit by the vehicle was treated for minor injuries.

  • Nine weeks after Michael Jackson's death, he will be buried today at Forest Lawn-Glendale near Los Angeles.  The Great Mausoleum there, several stories tall, is filled with notable celebrities incuding Clark Gable and Jean Harlow.  The service will be private, for family only, and the restricted nature of the area will make it close to impossible for fans to visit his grave.  Few details about the service have been disclosed, but the costs are said to be "extraordinary;" an attorney for Jackson's estate's administrators said during the hearing that part of the reason it was so expensive was because 12 burial spaces were being bought.

  • President Obama will use a unique platform to seize control again of the health insurance reform debate: next week in prime time, he will address a joint session of Congress to discuss specifics of the plan.

  • State agriculture inspectors discover listeria at an Eggo plant in southwest Atlanta.  The department says they caught it before the waffles were ever shipped to any stores, but Kroger isn't taking any chances: they're recalling 10-count boxes of Cinammon Toast Waffles and 8-count boxes of Toaster Swirlz Cinnamon Roll Minis.  The plant on Bucknell Drive is now shut down for cleaning while plant officials search for the source of the bacteria.

  • The late senator Ted Kennedy's memoir comes out later this month; "True Compass" is due out September 14.  He covers major issues like the Chappaquiddick accident 40 years ago which killed Mary Jo Kopechne.  Kennedy calls his actions "inexcusable," and says he had to live with the guilt and remorse ever since.

  • After 15 months, the 14th Street Bridge reopens to traffic by noon today--four months ahead of schedule.  The bridge is designed to be more pedestrian-friendly, with wider sidewalks; there's also a new turning lane and new southbound ramp to 10th Street.

  • Who can forget the legendary Gold Club?  It was shut down by the feds after a trial accusing its owner of racketeering and providing sex to pro athletes, but which ended with a guilty plea to credit card fraud charges.  That site is reopening in a tamer form--as a nightclub, called the Gold Room.

  • The KISS 104.1 weather forecast:  a mix of clouds and sunshine, with a high of 81, lows 60-64.  Friday, partly sunny and a high of 85.
