The parents of a Spelman sophomore killed by a stray bullet are planning to sue Clark Atlanta University; Rihanna talks about the aftermath of being beaten by her boyfriend; a Jonesboro woman could face charges after alerting police to a false Amber Alert. Details are on today's KISS News Now!
The parents of 19-year-old Jasmine Lynn, who was gunned down by a stray bullet on the Clark Atlanta campus as she walked back to her Spelman dorm, are suing CAU--saying the university failed to provide adequate security. Their lawyer, Rod Edmond, says the couple will hold a news conference today after filing suit in Fulton County. A Clark Atlanta spokesman declined comment because he hasn't yet seen the lawsuit.
The first pieces of Rihanna's interview with ABC's Diane Sawyer played on Good Morning America today. She explains that when she realized how much of a role model she actually is to girls, that's when she knew she couldn't stay with the boyfriend who'd abused her. Chris Brown is now serving five years probation and six months' community labor after pleading guilty to assaulting Rihanna.
"I couldn't be held responsible for telling them 'go back.' Even if Chris never hit me again, who's to say that their boyfriend won't? Who's to say that they won't kill these girls? And these are young girls," Rihanna said.
Rihanna also said that she was ashamed that she'd fallen in love with an abuser. More of the interview airs Friday on GMA and 20/20.
Charges could be coming against a Jonesboro woman who triggered an Amber Alert Wednesday. Cara Williams told Clayton County police that her daughter's father had kidnapped the little girl. The statewide alert was canceled when police found out that father Sentwali Corry actually has legal custody of the one-year-old girl, Sencerity--and that they were at their home in Maryland.
Gilmer County cops may file runaway charges against a 14-year-old boy who left home early Wednesday morning and stayed gone for fourteen and a half hours. The sheriff says Josh Chastain's parents may have to reimburse the county for a pricy daylong search which used dozens of deputies and a state patrol chopper. Chastain's sister spotted him walking with his dog about a mile from home Wednesday night; his parents say he's legally blind and suffers from depression.
Will Lisa Borders endorse Mary Norwood or Kasim Reed for Mayor of Atlanta? Borders' supporters gave her 14% of the vote tally Tuesday. She's expected to make an announcement in a day or two.
A Cobb County police officer is off the job, charged after a sting at an illegal poker game. Christopher Soltes, believed to be the dealer in a high stakes game at a condo in the Vinings Forest subdivision, was arrested Wednesday and resigned right afterwards. A neighbor says residents suspected gambling at the unit, which was crowded with cars and people every Saturday. Seven people were arrested after an undercover officer played a hand of Texas Hold 'Em.
For the second year in a row, his peers vote former UGA star Hines Ward as the NFL's dirtiest player. The Pittsburgh Steelers all-time leading wide receiver is known as a tough blocker, and got 11.6% of the vote in a Sports Illustrated poll of NFL players. Hines makes no apologies, either, telling SI after getting the title vote last year: "It's hard to sit there and tell everybody it's a violent sport but tone it down a little."
Two people are waking up in the Cherokee County jail after an overnight SWAT standoff. Authorities say a cabbie was driving a couple home to Seminole Way when the man started squabbling over the $35 fare--dashing inside to get a rifle, which he fired into the air then pointed at the driver. The couple came out of the house after a two-hour standoff once deputies fired tear gas into the home.
