(Thursday, 28 May 2009) A former Georgia lawmaker slams the Supreme Court nominee as "racist;" Senator Burris denies--again--that he tried to buy his seat; Chris Brown is sued on the same day he declares that he "ain't a monster." See what Brown had to say on today's KISS News Now!
Thirty-six Johns Creek teens are cited for underage drinking, and the owner and employees of a restaurant there are charged with giving the kids booze. Cops became suspicious when they saw a bunch of cars out back, and none in front, of Anatolia's. When they went inside they say found a lot of drunk teenagers--some asleep, some hiding in the rafters. The owner of the place was cited last September for giving minors alcohol. She denies it and told a reporter she may sue the Johns Creek police.
Newt Gingrich talks about Supreme Court nominee Judge Sonia Sotomayor on his Twitter account. Wednesday he tweeted that Sotomayor is "racist" and should withdraw from consideration for the high court. He was referring to a 2001 speech in which she said that in deciding certain cases, "a Latina woman with the richness of her experiences would draw a better conclusion than a white man who has not lived that life."
Arrested for murder, former Illinois cop Drew Peterson finds time to call a Chicago radio show collect--and crack jokes about his incarceration. "I didn't understand why they had seat belts on the toilet until after I had a couple of meals here,'' he said while the hosts played a drum-roll effect. He also made some other jokes while on the air for about seven minutes; he also said he misses his children and has prayed and read the Bible while behind bars. He's charged in the death of his third wife, but he insists she drowned accidentally.
Loganville police hunt a third suspect in a brutal home invasion which left an elderly couple badly beaten: 18-year-old Barry Partee. One victim, Epsie Ewing, remains hospitalized in critical condition, and two other accused suspects are already behind bars.
The acting commander at Fort Campbell in Kentucky orders everyone on base off regular duty for the next three days to focus on suicide prevention. Eleven soldiers at the base have killed themselves this year--two, just last week. "It will be better tomorrow. Don't take away your tomorrow," says Brigadier General Stephen Townsend. The head chaplain at Fort Campbell says frequent deployments have upped stress levels; three of their brigades have seen at least three tours in Iraq.
Illinois Senator Roland Burris denies all allegations of pay-to-play in the nomination which got him to the U. S. Senate. The FBI wiretaps of ousted Governor Rod Blagojevich's line reveal Burris talking to the governor's brother about fundraising. Burris said Wednesday he did so because he felt he had to if he wanted to be considered for the Senate seat. Burris also says he didn't tell an Illinois House impeachment committee that he discussed fundraising for ousted Gov. Rod Blagojevich because, like any good lawyer, he didn't want to volunteer information he wasn't asked about.
A Pennsylvania woman who'd claimed she and her 9-year-old daughter had been abducted and stuffed into a trunk is in a lot of trouble. Police tracked her to Disney World, where she'd flown after using a coworker's ID to buy the plane tickets.
For the second time this year, Atlanta City Council President Lisa Borders is a burglary victim. This time, the house alarm at her condo near Centennial Olympic Park woke her up around 1:30 Wednesday morning. She says it was "unnerving" and that the crooks were attempting to take her computers--having wrapped them neatly and put them into a box. She also says the burglars raided her pantry, putting food into garbage bags. Her southwest Atlanta home had a flat screen TV stolen in January. She says it just shows the quality of life is not what it should be in the city of Atlanta.
A photographer has sued Chris Brown over a scuffle with the singer's bodyguards at a Los Angeles gym. Robert Rosen's lawsuit states that he was assaulted and beaten by a bodyguard after snapping pictures in of Brown at an LA Fitness in Universal City, and that he fell down a flight of stairs after being chased. The lawsuit was filed on the same day Brown, 20, defended himself in a video posted on YouTube.
Brown is shown leaning in and speaking directly into the camera, which appears to be positioned in front of a bowling lane. He talks about his new album called "Graffiti,'' and a single expected this summer.
Then he says: "Everybody that's haters, they just been haters. All my real fans, I love you. I ain't a monster.''
The KISS 104.1 weather forecast: hazy, humid, 50% chance of afternoon showers, high near 82, low of 64.
