(Wednesday, 27 May 2009) An underground strip club is raided; Atlanta's mayor files complaints over a fiery comment by the police union's leader; Mike Tyson's daughter dies after an accident at the family's Arizona home. Details on today's KISS News Now!
An illegal strip club in Lilburn is out of business this morning. Two people have been charged with providing more "adult"-type entertainment than expected at the Lucky Billiards pool hall on Indian Trail-Lilburn Road. Police say a 15-year-old girl was among those performing lap dances at Lucky Billiards. The owner says he didn't know how old the Acworth girl was--but cops say the 21-year-old fellow dancer who drove her to work did.
Republicans are deciding whether to make a fight out of the Supreme Court confirmation of federal appeals Judge Sonia Sotomayor. President Barack Obama says Sotomayor is brilliant, and inspiring, with an impressive life story. White House spokesman Robert Gibbs says he doesn't think anyone could reasonably argue that Sotomayor is someone who legislates from the bench. The Senate's top Republican promises a fair hearing; another GOP senator, Olympia Snowe, praised the president for nominating someone she calls "a well-qualified woman."
Less than 24 hours after being identified as suspects in a brutal Loganville home invasion, 18-year-old J.J. Blackwell and 28-year-old Corey Butler are in custody. The men are accused of severely beating an elderly couple.
A Fayette County commissioner posts bond on drug charges. Police say 45-year-old Robert Horgan was pulled over for an expired tag, and when the cop noticed the smell of weed, Horgan admitted he'd been smoking.
Atlanta Mayor Shirley Franklin files complaints with state and federal authorities after an outburst by the head of the police union, Sgt. Scott Kreher, during a city council budget meeting, in which he said he'd like to beat her in the head with a baseball bat.
"My family was upset--still are upset," said Franklin. "It's bothered me more than I thought it would... To put aside all of his training, all of the discipline that he's learned over the years, and to make a violent statement, causes me to question whether there's more to this with him."
Kreher has since apologized and been suspended with pay, but the police union is standing by him. The sergeant says he was angry over the difficulty disabled officers have been having in getting their promised benefits. The mayor has declined Kreher's request to talk to her personally.
The family of Mike Tyson says words can't describe their grief. His four-year-old daughter, Exodus, died at a Phoenix hospital after accidentally strangling herself on a looped cord dangling from a treadmill.
"There are no words to describe the tragic loss of our beloved Exodus. We ask you now to please respect our need at this very difficult time for privacy to grieve and try to help each other heal," they said in a statement.
Police said Exodus either slipped or put her head in the loop of a cord hanging under the console and suffocated. Her seven-year-old brother found her and alerted their mom, who was cleaning house. She took the girl down and tried to revive her. Exodus was pronounced dead just before noon Tuesday after being on life support, said police Sgt. Andy Hill, who called the injury a "tragic accident."
The modest house (seen above) where his daughter was injured contrasts starkly with the lavish lifestyle Tyson had through his tumultuous years of boxing, when he spent tens of millions of dollars and says he had millions more stolen from him by unscrupulous associates.
During two years at the height of his career, he earned $140 million -- but he filed for Chapter 11 protection in U.S. Bankruptcy Court in 2003.
He has been promoting a new documentary about his life and told The New York Times earlier this month he had been sober for 15 months after years of drug and alcohol abuse. He has talked recently about how much his family means to him.
Finally, 2.5 years after James Brown's death, a South Carolina judge rules on how to divide his estate. His widow had challenged Brown's will because she was left out. About half of Brown's estate will go to a charitable trust; a quarter goes to wife Tomi Rae and their son, and a quarter to Brown's adult children. Someone could appeal.
For the second time in months, crooks have broken into a home of Atlanta City Council President Lisa Borders. Around 2:00 this morning, a woman called 911 to report that the alarm was going off, and she'd locked herself in an upstairs bedroom of the condo on Centennial Olympic Park Drive. No word yet if anything was taken; earlier this year, burglars stole a flat screen TV from another Borders home in southwest Atlanta.
The KISS 104.1 weather forecast: lots of clouds; a hazy, warm and humid day with a 50% chance of late-day showers and a high around 80; low tonight 67. Thursday mostly to partly cloudy, 50% chance of a thunderstorm afternoon or evening, high 82.
