False Arrest Rocks Teen; Vick Leaving Prison Soon, TI Going In Soon; Councilman Tweets For 911

By Veronica Waters

(Monday, 18 May 2009)  An innocent 17-year-old is arrested after the teen police say is the real crook pointed the finger at him; Michael Vick will be leaving the federal prison system soon as TI prepares to serve the rest of his sentence; an Atlanta city councilman sends a call for help on Twitter.  Details on today's KISS News Now!

  • In Atlanta:  police drop charges against a 17-year-old East Point boy in April's fatal shooting of a cabbie.  They've now charged the 16-year-old who tried to put the blame on Gerald Wise--who spent 16 hours in custody before police say the juvenile confessed to the murder and to lying to the cops.  Wise's mother says her son is embarrassed and hurt, and plans to take a few days off from his job at a grocery store to, in his words, "do some thinking."

  • The price of gasoline has jumped 25 cents a gallon over the past three weeks!  It's $2.30 nationwide, about $2.18 for regular in metro Atlanta.  It's still $1.49 a gallon cheaper than it was a year ago.

  • Michael Vick is set to be released from the federal pen in Kansas this week, to serve the last two months of his dog fighting sentence on house arrest in Virginia.  Vick's expected to start working out with a trainer soon, as he aims to return to the NFL.

  • While Vick will be walking out of prison soon...TI will be walking in.  He's set to start serving his year-and-a-day sentence on federal weapons charges.  TI Harris has to report by May 26 and will do his time at a low-level lockup in Arkansas.  He'll likely serve only about two months behind bars, however, because he's getting credit for 305 days of home confinement he's already done.

  • Worried that he'd be put on hold with 911 on his dying cell phone, Atlanta City Councilman Kwanza Hall Tweets for paramedics after spotting a woman in medical distress.  Earlier this month, callers in southwest Atlanta said they were put on hold with 911 while a house burned down.  Friday, those on the scene at John Wesley Dobbs were having trouble getting through to emergency services, so Hall sent out a message on Twitter.  The woman who'd had a seizure was taken to Grady.

  • Closing arguments today, then jury deliberations begin in the Silver Comet Trail murder trial.  Prosecutors want the death penalty for Michael Ledford, who did not testify.  In an unusual move, the Paulding County jury got to take a field trip to the crime scene; the judge thought it would be helpful for them to see the spot on the Trail where Jennifer Ewing was attacked.  They also heard from the woman Ledford served time for raping in 1991.  She says he dragged her into the woods, and afterwards, made small talk with the stunned woman--and asked her for a cigarette--before allowing her to go home.

  • The Missouri woman convicted of bullying a teenage girl on Myspace until the girl committed suicide will be sentenced today.  Lori Drew is expected to get a year's probation.  She, her daughter and a friend set up a Myspace account in the name of a teen boy to flirt with, then torment, the girl, who ended up hanging herself.

  • Thirty-seven people were arrested for trespassing Sunday while President Obama addressed grads at Notre Dame.  They were protesting the president's stance on abortion.  The president supports abortion rights but says the procedure should be rare.  He praised what he called Notre Dame's tradition of open minds and hearts, and didn't shy away from talking about the obvious, pointing out that neither side can claim to speak for the Almighty.  Among those protesting was Norma McCorvey--who is the "Roe" in the landmark Roe v. Wade case.  She has since become anti-choice.

  • The KISS 104.1 weather forecast:  mostly sunny, breezy high of 69 today, lows in the 40s tonight.  Tuesday: partly to mostly sunny, windy high of 72.
