Severe Weather Expected; Cop Shoots Unarmed Man; From White House To Sesame Street

By Veronica Waters

(Wednesday, 6 May 2009)  Brace for severe storms in metro Atlanta today; a man is in critical condition after being shot by an Atlanta cop working security; the first lady says she's "high" on Sesame Street.  Get the latest headlines and the weather radar on today's KISS News Now!

  • We're expecting severe weather today as heavy rain moves in from the northwest to the southeast.  Some of the thunderstorms are expected to be severe and heavy.  A flood watch is in effect through tonight and possibly tomorrow morning.

Forecasters say we could get two to three inches of rain.  The storms could produce tornadoes, damaging winds up to 70 miles an hour, and hail up to an inch and a half in diameter. Metro Atlanta is under a tornado watch until 7:00 p.m.   Here's the radar from AccuWeather.com.

  • An off-duty Atlanta cop shoots a man outside the City Views apartments off Richardson Street in southwest Atlanta.  The APD officer, apparently suspecting some sort of drug activity, contends 27-year-old Tramaine Miller refused an order to show his hands and that he grabbed for something under his seat.  But an eyewitness disputes that, saying he saw Miller's hands in the car himself.  The officer, who works security at the complex near Turner Field, thought the man had a gun and fired once, hitting Miller in the face; he's critical at Grady.  Miller's father says his son was at the complex to deliver medicine to his aunt.  The search of his car only turned up a cell phone.  The cop's name hasn't been released, but he's on a leave during a three-day firearm review.

  • A Fulton County grand jury indicts a 22-year-old woman and her mother in the fatal Easter Sunday crash which killed five people.  Driver Aimee Michael faces felony charges of vehicular homicide; her mother Sheila Michael is accused of evidence tampering for helping get the BMW fixed.  Fulton County District Attorney Paul Howard says the younger Michael's biggest mistake was driving away; he says had she stayed on the scene, she might only have faced a misdemeanor charge.

  • A McDonough school shut down because of a 14-year-old student's H1N1 flu will reopen earlier than planned.  Eagle's Landing Christian Academy will resume classes Thursday, instead of staying closed for two weeks.  The CDC re-evaluated its mandatory 14-day closure policy.

  • A 33-year-old Texas teacher hospitalized with swine flu has died.  Doctors say she had "chronic underlying health conditions," but had recently given birth to a healthy baby girl.  Health officials in the state stopped short of saying the H1N1 flu actually caused her death.

  • In DeKalb County, a pregnant woman is recovering from H1N1 at home, but a three-year-old Cobb County boy is hospitalized with it.

  • This may be the most talked-about burger run ever.  President Obama and Vice President Biden made a motorcade run to Ray's Hell Burger in Arlington, Virginia Tuesday, waited in line, and paid cash--even offering to buy lunch for the reporters with them.  The president got a cheddar cheeseburger with spicy mustard; the VP got Swiss and jalapenos on his.

  • It wasn't Inauguration Day, planting a garden, or even hugging the Queen of England, that tops Michelle Obama's wow list since moving into the White House.  She says it's the appearance she taped Tuesday for Sesame Street, talking about good nutrition with Elmo.  Air date to be announced.

"I never thought I'd be on Sesame Street with Elmo and Big Bird, and I was thrilled. I'm still thrilled. I'm on a high," she told the United Nations later that day.  "I think it's probably the best thing I've done so far in the White House. But we were there talking about nutrition and healthy eating.  And it's just been a thrill."

  • Retired Colts coach Tony Dungy meets with Michael Vick in the federal pen in Leavenworth in a get-together Vick's agent calls both positive and private.  Dungy's long been involved in prison ministries.

Back in March, Vick's lawyer Danny Meachum said, "My concern is helping Michael get back to his family and surround him with people like Julius Erving, Tony Dungy, and Bishop T.D. Jakes. We need people around him who can help him and his family get back on the right track."

Vick is about to finish a 23-month sentence for his dogfighting conviction, and is scheduled to be released to home confinement in Virginia May 20.  His sentence ends July 20.

  • The Atlanta Hawks get off to a sluggish start in Game 1 of their Eastern semifinal series against Cleveland.  The Cavs beat the Hawks 99-72 last night.  Game 2 is Thursday.

  • The KISS 104.1 weather forecast:  showers and thunderstorms, some severe, high 77, low 64.
