Snow=Power Outages, School Closings; Chris Brown & Rihanna Back Together?; NFL Players Missing

By Veronica Waters

(Monday, 2 March 2009)   Power is out for thousands after Georgia's snowfall; Chris Brown and Rihanna said to be together again; two NFL players are among four missing deep sea fishermen.  Get details on today's KISS News Now!

  • Clayton, Coweta, DeKalb, Fulton, Gwinnett, Henry and Newton Counties are among the metro Atlanta school districts closed today; the University of Georgia will delay its opening until noon because of the snowfall that hit Georgia Sunday.  That snow is now barreling into the northeast, in storm form.  Delta and AirTran pre-emptively canceled 400 flights in and out of Hartsfield-Jackson, as did three major New York airports.

  • Tens of thousands of Georgians are struggling without power this cold morning; strong winds and snow and ice buildup toppled tree limbs onto power lines.  Georgia Power reports most of its outages around metro Atlanta and Athens; local EMCs also kept crews working thru the night to reconnect some 45,000 customers.

  • Bad weather in Florida is making the search tough for NFL players Corey Smith of the Lions, and Marquis Cooper of the Raiders.  The ex-Bucs teammates and two deep fishing buddies have been missing since heavy winds and choppy waters arose off the coast Saturday.  The Coast Guard says there was no SOS from Cooper's boat. Relatives say the men have flares and lifejackets.

  • Just three weeks behind his arrest on suspicion of domestic violence, word is all over that Chris Brown has gotten back together with Rihanna after he called her a few days ago to wish her a happy 21st birthday.  The couple were said to be cuddling up at one of Diddy's houses in Miami over the weekend.

  • Good news on the economic front:  Consumer spending was up in January! Personal incomes were up too, and both were higher than expected.  Still, the Commerce Department warns the increases could be temporary.

  • Michael Vick will have to go to court yet again.  A federal judge in Virginia says he won't approve the football star's bankrupcy proposal unless Vick shows up in person next month so the judge can decide whether he's credible or not.  Vick's expected to be released from a federal prison to finish out his dogfighting sentence in home confinement by May 21.

  • Legendary broadcaster Paul Harvey died this weekend in Arizona; he was 90 years old.

  • An adult and child drown after their Camry plunges into a lake in a Marietta business park.  Rescuers were hampered by high winds and near-freezing water at the North by Northwest complex.

  • Denver Broncos wide receiver Brandon Marshall is in trouble again after being arrested in Atlanta on Sunday on a disorderly conduct charge stemming from a fight. ESPN first reported Marshall's latest arrest, his fourth since March 2006.  The 24-year-old has made a big effort to stay off the police blotter since a 2008 suspension which followed a series of incidents involving a former girlfriend.

  • Four years after her honorable discharge, a military mom's called back to active duty and has now arrived at Fort Benning--with her two small kids in tow.  Lisa Pagan explains her husband is on the road for business a lot, so no one else is at home to take care of them.  An Army spokesman says 1,000 of the 25,000 individual ready reserve troops recalled since 9/11 have failed to report but were not court-martialed, so he says Pagan, who's seeking another discharge, will probably not be charged.

  • Some notable hip-hoppers were at the Nation of Islam's annual Saviors Day event near Chicago Sunday.  Snoop Dogg says he's with the Nation because he's an "advocate for peace."  TI spoke via video, with an empasis on education; and Doug E Fresh was also spotted at the convention.

  • The KISS 104.1 weather forecast:  breezy, sunny highs 38-42 today, lows in the 20s Monday night.  Tuesday, sunshine, high of 47.  Wednesday, partly cloudy, high 56.
