On Capitol Hill today, President Obama will lobby Republican lawmakers to support an economic jump-start package. GOP critics like Georgia Congressman Tom Price complain the plan has wasteful spending and needs more tax cuts.
"One of my favorite is $600 million to prepare the nation for nationalized health insurance. This isn't stimulus. This is paying back political friends," says Price.
Savannah Republican Congressman Jack Kingston, though, appreciates the effort.
"He's reaching out to us, and we're going to reach our hand right back to him and say, 'We want to help,'" says Kingston.
The House votes on the bill tomorrow.
The Senate confirms Timothy Geithner as Treasury Secretary; both of Georgia's Senators, Isakson and Chambliss, voted against him. President Obama attended Geithner's swearing-in last night, saying the new Secretary has his full confidence and trust. Geithner's expected to unveil new rules today to limit how much influence lobbyists get over the $700 billion bank rescue program.
There's new information about the south Georgia plant the FDA says is the source of a nationwide peanut butter snacks recall: records show the PCA Corp. plant in Blakely was not tested for salmonella in two inspections last year--and a 2007 test for the bug was negative.
Imprisoned quarterback Michael Vick is suing an ex-financial adviser for at least $2 million. He claims Mary Wong of Nebraska used his money for her personal use, and didn't tell him she'd been sanctioned by the New York Stock Exchange for depositing another client's funds into her personal accounts. The lawsuit also names the company Wong co-owns with three NFL players: Demorrio Williams of the Kansas City Chiefs and twins Josh Bullocks of the New Orleans Saints and Daniel Bullocks of the Detroit Lions.
Under the Gold Dome, Senate Republicans are vowing to fund property tax relief for Georgia homeowners, despite wrestling with a $2 billion budget shortfall. Hundreds of nurses will converge on the capitol today, protesting budget cuts which could slash school nurses from schools altogether.
