Barack Obama Steps Into History Today

By Veronica Waters

(Tuesday, 20 January 2009) Today, Barack Hussein Obama becomes the 44th President of the United States of America.

  • The stage is set for Barack Hussein Obama to be sworn in as the 44th President of the United States of America--the first black man to hold the top job in the White House.

  • This morning, Obama and his family will attend services at St. John's Episcopal Church, then head for coffee hosted by the Bushes at the White House, before going on to the Capitol.

  • Uniformed military personnel are patrolling street corners in an unprecedented security presence for a full day of festivities.  Subway cars are already packed and traffic's expected to be bumper-to-bumper as a crowd estimated to reach two to three million streams into DC.

  • Barack Obama has invoked Abraham Lincoln several times during the course of his road to the White House: when he announced his candidacy, when he took a train to the Capitol, and today when he is sworn in as the 44th President of the United States, his hand will be on the same Bible Lincoln used at his inauguration in 1861.

  • Obama aides say he has perfected his inaugural address.  It's expected to last 15-20 minutes and to focus on the twin themes of accountability and responsibility.

  • Continuing a White House ritual, President Bush has written a note and left it for the incoming president in the top drawer of his desk. After the swearing-in, Bush choppers to Texas for a rally in Midland before ending up at his Crawford ranch.

  • Obama will get off to a busy start--balls tonight, then tomorrow, meetings with his national security team, including commanders in Iraq and Afghanistan.  Also Wednesday, the president, the vice president and their families will participate in a prayer service at the Washington National Cathedral.

  • The KISS 104.1 weather forecast:  windy, cold highs of 34-37.  A wind A wind advisory is in effect for metro Atlanta until 7:00 p. m.  Lows tonight, 18-23.  Wednesday, sunny high of 43.
