Obama Celebrations On; Obama Urges Service; Little Debbie Snacks Recalled

By Veronica Waters

(Monday, 19 January 2009)  The celebrations are underway for the Obama inauguration; Obama urges a day of service; the peanut butter snacks recall expands.  See Obama's pre-inaugural speech at the Lincoln Memorial on today's KISS News Now!

  • A celebrity-packed concert Sunday at the Lincoln Memorial:  the "We Are One" celebrations are on as Barack Obama prepares for his inauguration as the nation's 44th president.  The gala featured performers from Stevie Wonder, Usher and Shakira--wowing the crowd with Wonder's "Higher Ground"--to Bono and U2, Garth Brooks and Bruce Springsteen, Mary J. Blige and John Mellencamp, Will.i.am, Herbie Hancock, and Sheryl Crow...the unbelievable lineup went on and on.

  • Movie stars including Denzel Washington, Jamie Foxx, Steve Carrell, Queen Latifah and Forrest Whitaker also took part in the fun at the Lincoln Memorial.  Foxx did a one-minute impersonation of Obama during the pre-inaugural "We Are One" concert.  Obama hesitated, then laughed and got out of his seat when Foxx said, "Chi-Town, stand up!"  HBO will be re-airing the event several times.

  • Beyonce's rendition of "America The Beautiful" brought an exciting end to the pre-inauguration concert Sunday at the Lincoln Memorial.  She'll sing "At Last" for Barack and Michelle Obama's first dance as first couple.

  • The Obamas and the Bidens are taking part in a community renovation project in honor of King Day.  Mr. Obama is urging Americans to make today a national day of service in honor of Martin Luther King, Jr.  He'll also take some time today to perfect his inauguration speech.  He tells Tom Joyner this morning that his older daughter put the pressure on as they chatted about his upcoming address:  "Malia says, 'First African-American president?  Better be good!'"

  • Here in Atlanta, the annual King Day program at Ebenezer Baptist is facing criticism from some angry over the choice of keynote speaker Rick Warren, the author and pastor who who has likened gay marriage to incest or pedophilia.

  • Hearings are set to begin in a Guantanamo war crimes court for five men accused of planning the 9/11 terror attacks.

  • Some Little Debbie peanut butter crackers are being recalled because there's a chance of salmonella contamination: Peanut Butter Toasty crackers, and Peanut Butter Cheese Sandwich crackers.  Sunday, Peanut Corp. of America in Blakely, GA expanded its recall of products made with peanut paste as well as peanut butter. The FDA urges everyone to avoid snacks with peanut butter in them for now, until they can clear the products. The warning does not apply to jars of peanut butter, just industrial-sized canisters PCA sold to instutions like schools and nursing homes.

  • The jetliner that crash-landed in the Hudson River is now at a New Jersey pier, where investigators will get a closer look at the damaged plane.  The black boxes have been recovered, but investigators may give up on trying to recover the plane's left engine because ice floes are making it dangerous to put divers or special equipment into the water.

  • Landing a plane on theHudson can land you seats at the biggest event of the year.  Pilot Chessley Sullenberger's appearance on the Today show has been canceled, as he and his family will be guests at the Obama inauguration.

  • It wasn't the "B.I.G."-gest of the weekend movies, but the new biopic about Biggie Smalls was still a pretty big deal. The film "Notorious'' finished fourth in the box office race, taking in $21.5 million.

  • It's a Steelers/Cardinals Super Bowl!  Arizona beat the Philadelphia Eagles 32-25 in the NFC title game to make it to their first Super Bowl ever.  The Pittsburgh Steelers take the AFC Championship, beating the Baltimore Ravens 23-14.  The Super Bowl is February 1 in Tampa, FL.
