Your "friend in the diamond business" has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. The Shane Company cites a disappointing holiday season. Four of its 23 stores are in metro Atlanta. The company is asking to keep paying its employees, which are in 14 states; it will still honor gift cards, lifetime warranties on everything but pearls and says the layaway stock is also safe.
Even former leaders of the free world can become crime victims: while ex-President Jimmy Carter and wife Rosalynn are often seen riding their bikes in Freedom Park, it may be a minute before they're out pedaling again. The two had their bicycles stolen earlier this month--from just outside the Carter Center. No explanation how the bikes could be taken from right under the noses of the Secret Service.
The FBI and federal marshals search the Birmingham area this morning for an Indiana investment manager and pilot who allegedly crashed his plane to fake his own death because his businesses are near ruin. Investigators believe 38-year-old Marcus Schrenker faked a distress call before parachuting from his plane over Alabama. The single-engine Piper Malibu continued on autopilot and crashed in a Florida swamp near a residential area.
Three Lilburn men are jailed without bond in Gwinnett County, facing human trafficking charges. Police accuse the trio of keeping a group of women in a house on Sunfield Drive, and only letting them out to work. Cops say that the women were not physically abused or forced into sexual acts, and that the men all voluntarily talked to police before their arrests--apparently believing they had done nothing illegal.
Senate Democrats reverse course and grudgingly accept Illinois appointee Roland Burris; he's expected to be sworn in this week.
An Ohio teen could get life in prison when he's sentenced for shooting his parents--after they took away his Halo 3. Daniel Petric's mom was killed, his dad wounded. Defense attorneys argued the teen had become so addicted to the game he'd lost touch with reality, but the judge ruled the 17-year-old was not insane and said there was evidence he'd plotted the crime ahead of time.

Researchers exposed healthy adults to the cold virus, and waited a week. Those who got seven hours of sleep a night or less were three times more likely to catch a cold than those who slept eight hours or more. The quality of sleep mattered, too: those who tossed and turned had an increased risk of getting sick.
An Austell court clerk is jailed without bond on theft charges. Patricia Wilcurt is accused of stealing over $121,000 from the coffers holding fees and fines. Police say she spent at least some of the money on bills.
Tony Dungy has retired after seven seasons as head coach of the Indianapolis Colts, saying he "got to live a dream most people don't get to live.'' The Colts went to the playoffs in each of their seven seasons under Dungy, who became the first black coach to win a Super Bowl.
