Gwinnett Needs Teachers; Obama Announcing Iraq Timetable; Vick To Go Home

By Veronica Waters

(Friday, 27 February 2009)  Gwinnett County's hiring teachers; the President has an Iraq withdrawal timetable; VIck will go home to finish his sentence.  Details on today's KISS News Now!

  • Georgia's largest school district is growing--and hiring.  Gwinnett County Schools host a big teacher job fair tomorrow at the Gwinnett Center from 8:00 a. m to 2:00 p. m.  Spokesman Jorge Quintana says they especially need certified teachers for math, science and special needs.

You need to pre-register on the Gwinnett School system website to make a reservation for an interview. Walk-ins won't be accepted after 10:00 a. m.  Salaries for first year teachers start just under $39,000, and Quintana says many teachers in the district with 10 years on the job and master's degrees are pulling in salaries in the high $50s.

  • Struggling with a $14.5 million budget shortfall, the Fayette County School Board votes unanimously to cut the salaries of all the district's workers by 4.5%.

  • President Barack Obama has set a timetable to bring most US troops home from Iraq within 18 months; enough troops will stay for elections and oversight through 2010.  The President's also boosting American troops in Afghanistan; 2,400 Georgia National Guard troops are set to deploy there for a year.  Mr. Obama makes his first speech to troops as commander in chief today at Camp Lejeune, NC.

  • Demonstrators who say they want to encourage the government to be more fiscally responsible will bring tea bags to the state capitol today. The protesters of the economic stimulus and various bailouts plan to mail the bags to Washington later in a sort of modern-day Boston Tea Party.

  • A Michigan man pleads no contest to charges he was caught trying to have sex with a car wash vacuum.  Jason Leroy Savage faces up to a year in jail when he's sentenced next month for indecent exposure.

  • Stopping the presses in Denver! Its biggest and best newspaper, the Rocky Mountain News, prints its last edition today after 150 years in business.

  • Michael Vick will serve the rest of his prison sentence at home; there's no room at a halfway house for him to finish out his federal sentence for quarterbacking the Bad Newz Kennels.  He'll likely wear an electronic monitor while wrapping up his time at his Hampton home.  Depending on whom you ask, Vick will either be released any day now or sometime before the end of May.  Vick's bankruptcy lawyers will be back in court today, haggling over his latest financial disclosure and how his assets will be handled.  His criminal lawyers say that Vick plans to resume his NFL career.

  • A Lousiana trucker is accused of trading two kids in her care for a cockatoo and $175. She allegedly offered the 4- and 5-year-olds in exchange for the pet bird and cash to a couple who'd been trying to have a baby.  A third child apparently went to a different couple. The three have been charged with kidnapping.

  • She's made him big bucks and bankability in Hollywood, but Tyler Perry says he may retire Madea.  Perry says he wants to do other things as an artist that don't require him to dress in drag.  "Madea Goes To Jail" is the reigning box office champ after making $41 million its opening weekend.

  • Tiger Woods' first comeback from his knee surgery falls short; he's been eliminated from the Accenture Match Play Championship in Arizona by Tim Clark of South Africa.

  • The KISS 104.1 weather forecast: metro Atlanta could face severe weather this weekend.  An 80% chance of rain and thunderstorms today increases to 100% late in the day, and some areas could get 2-4 inches of rain, creating a flash flood risk.  Friday, a breezy high of 62.  Saturday, showers diminish by afternoon with a high of 62.  Sunday, 50% chance of light snow or light rain and a windy high 44.
