The owner of a pit bull could face criminal charges after the animal attacked a 12-year-old girl. Alexis Zachary is hospitalized with facial injuries after the pit bull mauled her while she was at a friend's house Saturday in Lithonia; the animal belongs to her friend's cousin. Zachary's mom grabbed a brick and knife and fatally wounded the animal. Her daughter has recovered enough to go home in time for Christmas.
Exhausted, happy Democrats resumed nudging their health insurance reform compromise one step closer to pre-Christmas passage as lawmakers showed up to start work as the sun rose today. The 10-year, nearly $1 trillion plan would extend coverage to some 30 million uninsured Americans, and has the endorsement of the American Medical Association. Today is the second of three test votes, which would add the sweeteners to the deal which convinced some lawmakers to vote for the measure. A full vote on the bill could come as soon as Thursday.
Two New York City EMTs are suspended without pay for allegedly refusing to help a pregnant woman who collapsed in the coffee shop where they were on a break. Eyewitnesses say the paramedics ignored pleas for help from the woman's coworkers, instead telling them to "Call 911"--then picked up their bagels and walked out. The woman and her premature baby later died. emergency medical technician Jason Green has been on the job six years; his partner Melissa Jackson is a four-year veteran.
She had a moment in the national spotlight when President Barack Obama singled her out the night he won the presidency. Monday, Ann Nixon Cooper died at her Atlanta home at the age of 107. On election night, the president called Cooper--who was born one generation past slavery--an example of "the heartbreak and the hope," pointing out that she had lived through the segregated time when blacks were not allowed to vote--and then cast her ballot for the man who would become America's first black president. Cooper would have turned 108 on January 9. The week of January 5, her autobiography, "A Century and Some Change; My Life Before the President Called My Name," is scheduled to be released by Simon & Schuster.
Next time you get stranded on the tarmac, your airline could have to cough up big bucks. A new rule says airlines have to take you back to the terminal after a three-hour wait and give you food and water during that time, or be fined up to $27,500 per passenger. It's a response to complaints from passengers being stuck on planes with no food and stinky toilets. The new rules will go into effect in 120 days.
Citigroup is denying a report that hackers got into their system, making off with tens of millions of dollars. The Wall Street Journal says the crooks are tied to a Russian cyber gang, and that at least two other systems--including one connected to a US government agency--were also attacked. The FBI is investigating.
One of metro Atlanta's best-known country clubs is on the auction block. Country Club of the South, in north Fulton County, will be sold at a foreclosure auction next year--the golf course, the clubhouse, and all the facilities. The 700 homes around the club are not included.
Athens-Clarke County Police are looking for a woman who raised a real stink after over a botched store return. Jerry Evans, manager of Joy Joy Beauty, says the woman didn't have all the parts for the blow dryer she was bringing back, nor did she have a receipt, so he told her to come back. That's when she went off and destroyed a thousand-dollar perfume display, shoving it over and cursing before she ran out. The woman then drove off down the wrong side of the street, blaring her horn all the way.
Dunwoody Police are investigating after a man died while being detained for allegedly shoplifting at the Wal-Mart on Ashford-Dunwoody. When a loss prevention officer confronted 38-year-old Marty Bridges, a fight broke out and the suspect went limp. Bystanders who performed CPR couldn't revive him. An officer says Bridges had hit his head on a sidewalk--but had continued fighting.
The top U. S. commander in northern Iraq has made pregnancy a court-martial-worthy offense. General Anthony Cucolo says he needs all able bodies ready to serve. Since he took over command there, four soldiers have gotten pregnant. All of them have received written reprimands.
"Olivia" from Sesame Street dies after a two-year battle with breast cancer. Alaina Reed-Amini was 63. She joined the Sesame Street cast in 1976, and acted there until 1988. Reed-Amini also starrted on the NBC TV show "227" and appeared on Broadway in productions of "Chicago" and "Hair." She is survived by her husband and two children from a previous marriage.
