Atlanta Runoffs Today; Accused Cop Killer Killed; Obama Preps Troop Surge

  • Atlanta's mayoral race is in the national spotlight.  Today's runoff could draw as few as 25% of voters as Kasim Reed and Mary Norwood battle for City Hall.  Many are watching to see whether the city elects its first white mayor in four decades, but both candidates have supporters of all races.  An Insider Advantage pollster says conventional wisdom has Reed edging ahead for the win, although the candidates are in a statistical dead heat with 46% of the vote.  Eight percent of likely voters said they were undecided. 
  • Accused cop killer Maurice Clemmons is dead.  Police in Washington tracked him down in a Seattle neighborhood after investigators gave them a list of possible hiding spots.  The 37-year-old was near a stolen car a patrolman was spotted and ran a tag check on this morning.  Clemmons was carrying a gun he'd stolen from one of the dead officers, and when the officer spotted him, he ordered Clemmons to show his hands and stop.  When he didn't, the cop shot and killed him.  At the scene, a couple dozen officers shook hands and patted each other on the back.

    Four people have been arrested for helping Clemmons avoid arrest since he was accused of fatally shooting four uniformed officers working on their laptops at a coffee shop Sunday morning.  Investigators say they don't know what prompted Clemmons' attack.

  • More American troops are expected in Afghanistan by Christmas.  President Barack Obama briefs congressional leaders today on a surge of some 30,000 troops, then jets to West Point for a national TV speech on the increase.  The new battle strategy which is expected to focus on helping Afghanis help themselves, and the White House promises it is not an open-ended commitment.

  • The husband accused of crashing the White House State Dinner says he and his wife are not party crashers.  Tareq Salahi tells the Today show this morning that the accusation is the most devastating thing he and his wife have ever experienced.  Salahi says they have great respect for the president and will continue cooperating with the Secret Service.  He promises that "the truth will soon come out."

  • Retailers are still adding up the Cyber Monday sales tally, but CNET.com says early numbers indicate purchases will top $900 million.  A Web analytics company says sales are almost 20% ahead of a year ago.

  • Tiger Woods withdraws from the charity golf tournament he sponsors in California, saying injuires from his Friday car wreck will keep him at home.  He didn't play last year while recuperating from knee surgery, but he was at the course the entire week--and handed the trophy to the winner.

     
  • A bomb scare prompts police to evacuate a Decatur doctor's office, but what was found in the UPS package surprised everyone.  When the bomb squad opened the suspicious box in the lobby of Total Health Center on Rainbow Drive, it turned out to have 35 pounds of weed in it.  A DeKalb Police spokesman explains that often, drug dealers will have packages delivered to miscellaneous locations and have someone intercept it before it gets signed for by someone at that address.  They think that's what happened here, and that the person who was supposed to pick it up was late.  Police are now trying to track down the package's owner.

     
  • Loneliness is contagious.  A psychologist at the University of Chicago says lonely people send out negative vibes, and people react more negatively to them.  Next-door neighbors who are also friends tend to be affected by their neighbor's mood.  Women are more likely to feel lonely, especially if there's a change in their network of friends.

  • Gwinnett County residents get one more chance to sound off on a proposed property tax increase in a public hearing today.  County commissioners will then vote on a 20% millage increase, which would equal about an extra $160 a year in taxes for a home worth $200,000.

  • In sports:  The NFL has a pair of 11-and-0 teams in the same season for the first time in league history following the New Orleans Saints' 38-17 win over New England.  The Colts are the other team.

    Turf toe will keep Atlanta Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan out of this Sunday's game against Michael Vick and the Philadelphia Eagles at the Georgia Dome.

    The man who replaced Coach Ty Willingham at the head of Notre Dame's football team is out after going 35-27 over five seasons. Charlie Weis was let go Monday.

    Allen Iverson and the Philadelphia 76ers have met to discuss a possible return to the team, just days after the 10-time All-Star announced he was retiring.
