A Cobb County teen testifies his stepmom, Kecia Whitfield, bought the alcohol he gave his schoolmates before one of them drove drunk and died in January. Linden Winfree is himself a rising senior at Harrison High. Winfree says he asked Whitfield to bring him some liquor, but didn't tell her why. He testified that "She brought it home and it was set on the couch and I picked it up." Prosecutors say 16-year-old Garrett Reed, a Harrison High football player, got drunk on the booze Whitfield bought before he got behind the wheel of a car. The jury could start deliberating Whitfield's case as early as today.
After determined investigation and hard work, Atlanta Police arrest 20-year-old Demario Ware(right) in the July 25 robbery and murder of boxer Vernon Forrest. Police say he was not the shooter, and more arrests are expected. Tips flowed in after authorities revealed surveillance tape footage of the deadly confrontation, and police apparently identified Ware as one of the suspects earlier this week. Ware surrendered Tuesday night. His first appearance before a judge is expected at 11:00 a.m.
Chris Brown stands before a Los Angeles judge today, for formal sentencing in his beating of ex-girlfriend Rihanna. Brown will have to serve the equivalent of six months' jail time by performing some 1,400 hours labor-oriented community service. We asked you on a KISS News Now! poll what you thought of the apology Brown posted online. The results: 68% said you "think he is sincere;" 27% said he's "full of it."
Police say 52 shell casings were found after a gunman walked into an LA Fitness aerobics class in suburban Pittsburgh, turned off the lights and opened fire in the back of the room. 48-year-old George Sodini reportedly blogged about this violent fantasy for more than a year, but a motive is unclear. Three women died and nine others were wounded before Sodini killed himself.
Bernice King is on the short list to head up the SCLC, which Dr. King helped found in 1957. She would be the first woman to lead the Southern Christian Leadership Conference. Others seeking the job are Rev. Markel Hutchins and SCLC Georgia president Samuel Mosteller. A decision may come later this year.
A 50-year-old man's charged with robbing an 11-year-old girl at gunpoint outside his Cincinnati sports bar--and taking her skateboard. Apparently he objects to the kids cutting thru his parking lot. Cops charged him with felony armed robbery and gave her back her skateboard.
President Clinton brings twoAmerican journalists back to the United States from North Korea. Kim Jong-Il pardoned Euna Lee and Laura Ling after talks with the former president. The women had been sentenced to 12 years of hard labor for allegedly entering the country illegally, as they were working on a story about the trafficking of women.
Henry County parents are outraged over school bus route cuts which have left kids who live less than a mile from school...without their big yellow shuttle service. The school board, strapped for money, voted for the change in June. Parents plan on addressing the board with their concerns next week during a scheduled board meeting. Cobb County recently backpedaled on a plan to slash 50,000 bus stops to save money, but after hearing from angry parents, reduced the number to 11,000.
Paula Abdul tweets that she's leaving American Idol. After signing with a new manager, Abdul and Fox couldn't agree on terms for a new deal.
On Twitter, she wrote, "With sadness in my heart, I've decided not to return to #IDOL. I'll miss nurturing all the new talent, but most of all being a part of a show that I helped from day1become an international phenomenon." Randy Jackson, Simon Cowell and new judge Kara DioGuardi have all signed new contracts for season nine starting in January. Is it a bold negotiating tactic?
