Police Hunt Professor; Swine Flu Confirmed In U. S.; Stepmom's Murder Trial Begins

By Veronica Waters

(Monday, 27 April 2009)  Police investigate weekends shootings near the University of Georgia and on the Hampton University campus--one by a professor, one by a former student; swine flu is spreading; Joella Reaves' stepmom is going on trial.  Don't forget to get your free sample of KFC's grilled chicken today after you check out the headlines on KISS News Now!

  • A nationwide manhunt is underway for a University of Georgia marketing professor police say fatally shot his wife and two men Saturday at an Athens community theater while his kids sat in his Jeep nearby, then disappeared.  Witnesses say George Zinkhan had argued with her and another man before leaving and returning with guns.  Police now believe Zinkhan's in hiding, because there has been no activity on his credit cards, cell phone or passport.

  • An ex-Hampton University student follows a pizza guy into his former dormitory, shoots the delivery man and the dorm monitor, then turns the gun on himself.  All three survived; no current students were injured.  Hampton police say they don't know the 18-year-old gunman's motive.

  • A CDC doctor says she would not be surprised to see some deaths from swine flu in the United States before the virus is squashed.  Over 100 have died in Mexico and some New York high schoolers got sick after spring break in Cancun.  Twenty cases are confirmed in the U. S.  The CDC is "very pessimistic" that the current flu vaccine will work on this swine flu.

  • A 20-year-old mother is shot to death in a Snellville parking lot.  Police say the Conyers woman had just picked up her son in a custody swap and put him in her car when a man came up to her, seemed to heatedly exchange words with her, and shot her in the head before walking away.

  • Jury selection starts today in the Henry County trial of a woman accused of torturing and beating her stepdaughter to death in 2003.  Charlott Reaves' husband Rodney was convicted in February of the murder of his daughter, Joella, and is serving life in prison with the possibility of parole.

  • Tyra Banks is expected to take the stand Wednesday in New York in the trial of a Georgia man accused of stalking her coast-to-coast.  Brady Green was arrested earlier this year near the studio where Banks tapes her talk show; he told police then that the two of them were "good friends" and that they "had a thing together."  Prosecutors have offered Green numerous plea deals--none of them involving jail time--but he's turned them all down.

  • Columbus police find two inmates who escaped from their work detail cutting grass last week.  The men were spotted walking along I-185--still wearing their Muskogee County prison uniforms.

  • DeKalb County's school superintendent calls a press conference today to assure the public that bullying is a concern for the district.  An 11-year-old hanged himself after being frequently attacked at Dunaire Elementary.

  • KFC wants you to taste the "unfried" side of their menu.  KFC is giving free samples of its new grilled chicken today.  They say it has all the great taste and about half the calories.

  • Audiences were "Obsessed" with the new movie from Beyonce, Idris Elba and Ali Larter.  The film topped the box office with $28.5 million, opening on more than 2,500 screens.  Terrence Howard's "Fighting" is fighting for second place; Jamie Foxx's "The Soloist" opened on about 2,000 screens and came in fourth place.

  • Another GM brand bites the dust: Pontiac is being dropped as part of GM's restructuring agreement with the government.

  • This is going to make for an awkward Father's Day. An Iowa man bashes his 63-year-old dad in the head with a flashlight and a piece of firewood, then cuts out his pacemaker--using a pocketknife.  The father survived, and his 32-year-old son is charged with attempted murder.

  • The KISS 104.1 weather forecast:  mostly sunny high of 80 today; lows 54-60 tonight.  Tuesday, partly sunny, high 81.  Wednesday, partly to mostly cloudy, high of 80.
