The Pentagon's phasing out the F-22 Raptor which employs 2,000 people at Lockheed Martin in Marietta. But they'll be ordering more of the less-expensive F-35 Lightning--saving some of the jobs which would otherwise be cut. It's not clear yet how many.
No job cuts at Verizon Wireless--they're hiring! The company's opening a new service call center for 600 workers in Sanctuary Park in Alpharetta. Verizon expects to invest another $27 million in the north Fulton venture. Job recruiting begins this week.
Chris Brown formally pleads not guilty to felony assault and making a criminal threat charges, stemming from an altercation with Rihanna. Her attorney Donald Etra says he'll talk with Brown's attorney over the next three weeks, to see if the case can be resolved prior to a preliminary hearing which is likely by the end of April. Rihanna has made it clear she does not want to go to court, although Etra says she will cooperate if ordered to do so. Here's raw video of Chris Brown in court Monday:
MARTA calls for the General Assembly to have a special session so that it can get permissioin to dip into its reserves. Without that the transit agency says it will likely cut service to six days a week--canceling all service on Fridays.
Turkey now says an apparent plot to assassinate President Barack Obama was a hoax. The suspect was arrested Friday, before the President even arrived in the country, after police there received an anonymous e-mail tip. Police now say it was a hoax and the man's been released.
The latest NY Times/CBS News poll finds President Obama's having success in rebuilding the nation's economic confidence. Fully two-thirds of Americans approve of Mr. Obama's handling of the economy, foreign policy, Iraq and Afghanistan; just 31 percent have a favorable view of the Republican Party, the lowest showing ever in the poll's 25-year history.
Look for another film about the Tuskegee Airmen soon. It's called "Red Tails'' and is being done by Lucasfilm. The movie will star Terrence Howard and Oscar-winner Cuba Gooding Junior and soon begins shooting in Europe. The Tuskegee Airmen were a group of World War II black fighter pilots who endured racism along with the pressures of the war. Star Wars creator George Lucas is executive producer of the film, which is written by John Ridley. It's directed by Anthony Hemingway, whose credits include episodes of "The Wire'' and "Battlestar Galactica.''
The University of North Carolina has won its fifth national basketball crown. The Tar Heels annihilated Michigan State's Spartans in the NCAA championship game Monday night, 89-72.
Southwest is headed to the Big Apple. In its first foray into New York City, Southwest Airlines will be setting up shop at LaGuardia Airport in June... hoping to lure budget-conscious travelers in one of the country's busiest airports.
A 16-year-old thief in Phoenix is on his way to juvie--after his cell phone captures a play-by-play of him stealing car stereos. You know, your cell phone calls someone without you knowing? This boy's phone in his pocket did, ringing 911, where a dispatcher listened to him telling a friend how difficult it is to remove car stereos. When the police showed up, the teen was still holding the car radio in his hands.
