Son Murdered Before Dad's Funeral; Obama Quits; Turkey Day Dinner Cost

By Veronica Waters

(Friday, 14 November 2008)  An Ohio man in Georgia for his father's funeral is killed washing his dad's car; Senator Barack Obama is quitting his job; shoppers figure out how much a Thanksgiving Day dinner for 10 will run you.  Get more details about KISS News Now!

·         An Ohio man in metro Atlanta to bury his father is killed in a carjacking at the car wash.  Fairburn Police say 41-year-old Terrence Harris of Cleveland was shot and killed around 4:30 Thursday afternoon during a carjacking at the Golden Shine Car Wash on Highway 74.  The suspect allegedly shot Mr. Harris in the head, threw his body out of the car and drove away in the green 2000 Cadillac DeVille.  A tipster led police to the Cadillac early Friday morning in Coweta County.

·         President-elect Barack Obama resigns his Senate seat, effective Sunday, to make way for his replacement to be named.  In a written statement, Obama called his Senate service "one of the highest honors and privileges" of his life.  Under law, Illinois' Democratic governor selects Obama's successor; one of the names being floated is that of Congressman Jesse Jackson, Jr.

·         Two Democrats close to Obama's transition team say Hillary Rodham Clinton is being considered as a possible Secretary of State.  Others frequently mentioned as possible picks for that Cabinet position are Senator Chuck Hagel, Senator John Kerry, and New Mexico Governor Bill Richardson.

·         An Atlanta woman is indicted on federal charges for posing as a Hurricane Katrina evacuee and collecting federal disaster assistance.  33-year-old Yolanda Clay of College Park allegedly used a false New Orleans address to rake in $15,000 from FEMA.

·         Barack Obama's election has created a booming business in Obama paraphernalia; now the King family is looking for its cut of what could be hundreds of thousands of dollars in licensing fees from the items which include Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s image on them.  The Kings have been very vigilant guardians of who markets the civil rights legend's likeness.  King's nephew, Isaac Farris, Jr. says the estate "cannot allow our brand to be abused."  Farris adds that they'll probably soon license their own similar items to sell at the King Center.

·         Rumor has it that the soon-to-be First Lady Michelle Obama will be the March cover girl for Vogue Magazine.

·         How many people do you have coming over for Thanksgiving this year?  A feast for 10 will run you just under $45.  So says the American Farm Bureau, whose volunteer shoppers have fanned out every November for the last 26 years to hunt the best grocery bargains.  Shoppers look for the lowest prices, but avoid coupons and special deals.  The meal would include turkey, bread stuffing, sweet potatoes, rolls with butter, peas, cranberries, a relish tray of carrots and celery, plus pumpkin pie with whipped cream, and coffee and milk to drink.  That's actually about $2 up from last year; blame higher energy costs.

·         22 of the dogs rescued from Michael Vick's Virginia property are the stars of a new wine collection.  Each bottle of "Vicktory Dogs" wine features a portrait of a pit bull on the label and the dog's personal story.  The dogs are recovering at a sanctuary in Utah.

·         A new report on retail sales is just out; consumer shopping was down 2.8% in October. That's worse even than the November after the 9/11 terror attacks.

·         The slumping economy is causing a ripple effect at the post office; with less mail coming through, they're looking to make cuts in workers' overtime, and offering voluntary retirement packages.

·         The CDC says fewer American adults are lighting up!  Smoking rates are below 20% for the first time since the government started tracking them; the biggest decline in 2007 was among black women.
