MARTA ‘modernizes’ escalators after accidents

By Jennifer Griffies

Beginning Wednesday, MARTA will close two of its longest escalators for the next couple of months.  MARTA's Cara Hodgson tells WSB the escalators are at Peachtree Center Station and serve the food court entrance on the northeast concourse.

"It's part of our escalator modernization program which is something we've been doing for a while and it's to add new safety features, improve the reliability of the equipment, and to extend its useful life," said Hodgson.

There have been several accidents with injuries involving MARTA escalators.

MARTA customers may use the northwest exit or elevator to access the sidewalk across the street from the food court or use the southeast escalators or elevator and walk north on the same side of the street as the food court.

The work is expected to be completed by the end of October.
