Erickson: Game over for Herman

WSB political talk show host Erick Erickson thinks Herman Cain’s campaign is in a lot of trouble after a Dunwoody business woman accused the Presidential candidate of having an affair for 13 years. He told Scott Slade on Atlanta’s Morning News that Cain is sunk even if Herman is telling the truth and the affair never happened.

Scott Slade: While we wait for all of this to sort out, what do you think this does to Herman Cain candidacy?

Erick Erickson: It throws him off. He was trying to get back on message after the Libya flub and the bad foreign policy debate. Republican voters apparently don’t like his 9-9-9 plan because of a national sales tax. His poll numbers are going down and now he can’t get back on message. It doesn’t matter if the allegation is true or not. It matters that he is down 15 points with women in Iowa. He’s got 38 days and he can’t get back on a message to try to get those voters back because he is going to be dealing with this. Whether it is true or not, it is kind of game over for Herman.

His lawyer’s response read to a lot of politicos in Washington as a non-denial denial. That this was a private alleged relationship and the media has no business going there and neither does the public. Cain can’t tell voters where voters should or should not go. When does tell voters that, that tends to make voters want to go there.

SS: This all started, not with a Ms. White coming forward on her own. WAGA-TV broke the story last evening. They said it started with a tip and the tipster was shopping the story to anyone who would listen. Have you heard anything at about what motivated this tipster? Was it another campaign?

EE: No I haven’t. My guess is that it was another campaign, but you never know about these things. The curious thing to me is timing. Herman’s trajectory has been going down. Rarely in politics do you see someone kicking a candidate while they are already down. This seems like a pile-on to me. But it was very well timed to prevent Herman from having any sort of resurgence. It was timed to prevent Herman from having any sort of a bounce back from this.

Erick Erickson can be heard weeknights from 7-10 p.m. on News/Talk WSB. He is the editor of the conservative website Redstate.com and is a CNN contributor.
