Based on Irving Howe's "World of Our Fathers", this course will trace the steps of many of our ancestors who made the arduous journey from Eastern Europe to the Lower East Side of New York City, from the 1880s - the turn of the 20th century. We will examine a variety of sources to discover how they adopted to their surroundings while struggling to maintain their own culture and religion.
